When It Feels Like You’re Living Life Without a Map

Mel Ryan 100% you

Think of life like a cruise ship. Some of us board with everything pre-planned. Every activity booked. And every moment accounted for. Just like life we're ticking boxes, following the "right" choices and path… education, career, family, all the things we're supposed to do.

But when we're over-planned, we also tend to stop listening and we miss the pull toward what actually feels right. We're so busy on autopilot, scheduled within an inch of our life. So, we override the quiet nudge that says, "go left" or "try this" or "rest here". Because we're so busy following that 'life itinerary' that we forget that we're actually allowed to wander and live life without a map.

The Problem with Over-Planning Your Life

When we plan everything, the overriding theme we think we're creating is safety. Sometimes, we are. But other times, we're just trying to control outcomes we can't actually control.

The more we plan, the more we think we should be able to predict what happens next. And when life doesn't follow our script, like the times when people make choices we don't understand, or when situations unfold differently than we expected we panic.

We try to intervene or fix more. Do more. And instead of feeling safer, we end up more overwhelmed, frustrated, and even further away from our own truth. We can feel as though we’ve been cast out into the wilderness. What's happening here is that the more responsibility we take for outcomes that aren't ours to control, the more we lose ourselves in the process.

What If You Trusted Yourself to Feel Your Way Through Life Without a Map?

Imagine getting on that cruise ship with zero plan? What could it take for you to trust yourself to feel your way through life without a map… whether that's go left or right, loud or quiet, rest or explore?

And nope, that's not reckless. That's you coming home to yourself. That’s you getting to understand what your own version of life’s unique experiences are. That’s living life without a map.

When we pause the over-planning and start checking in with what actually feels right, something inside us shifts. We stop trying to control everything around us and start reconnecting with what we can actually control. It may not feel like much at first, but we can control our own choices, responses, and how we respond to our own needs.

This doesn't mean we stop caring about the people we love or the situations we're in. But it can mean we stop carrying what isn't ours to carry. We can let people go on their own journey. And that we trust that there's a bigger picture, even when we can't see it yet. And when we do that, we can finally feel like we can breathe again.

Coming Back to Your Truth

So how do we actually do this? How do we step out of the chaos and come back to ourselves?

  • We pause.
  • We step out to check in.
  • We breathe.
  • We reassess.

And we ask ourselves… What can I actually control in this situation? What do I need right now?

Maybe you need to debrief, or you need reassurance. Maybe you need to go back through your life and remind yourself of all the times things felt impossible but worked out better than you could have imagined. Maybe you just need to get outside, feel the sun on your face, put your bare feet on the grass, and let your nervous system settle for a few moments.

Because when we're in chaos, we can't support anyone. Not really. But when we ground ourselves, and when we feel we can come back to what we can control, then we create space for clarity, compassion, and for empowered choices. When we make these attempts, that's where the real support happens. It starts with us. Not in the fixing of other people or what's happening. Or in the controlling of them and their stuff. But in being present with ourselves first. This is what it becomes to live life without a map.

Your Permission Slip for Life Without a Map

If you're taking that pause and releasing the over-planning, you're not going to miss out. FOMO not needed here. And you're not going to get life ‘wrong’. Instead, you might just be surprised in letting life unfold the way it's meant to, for you.

So, here's your permission slip to put down the itinerary, and start checking in. Take care of you. Make some time to reconnect, to breathe, and to be present. Try and get some sunshine in, bare feet on the grass, maybe listen to some sound healing or some music, or go for a walk. Anything that's going to ground you and pause the chaos for a moment so you can have some time to check in and listen to what you need to support yourself.
