Avoid the Unexpected Life Impacts that Turn Your World Upside Down

Mel Ryan 100% you

Life has a way of throwing critical unexpected life events, massive curveballs at us. You know those sudden, disruptive events that turn your whole world upside down. These are called "life bombs". Now there’s sometimes in life where these life bombs are unavoidable so it’s important to understand a way to limit their frequency and soften the impact of their after effects. There’s also the early warning signs of the soul shakers. They’re trying to push us beyond our comfort zone. Here's how you can start to see the warning signs and can become more resilient in the face of life's explosions and what you’re experiencing in your current life bomb.

Recognising the Warning Signs

Life bombs don't often come completely out of the blue. There’s always subtle signs if we take notice to what’s going on in your lives. How:

  • Pay attention to your intuition and "gut feelings"
  • Notice patterns of discomfort or unease in certain situations
  • Be aware of physical symptoms like fatigue, headaches or tension
  • Recognise when you're consistently ignoring your own needs

By tuning into these early warning signs, you may be able to course-correct before a full-blown life bomb blows up in your life.

Growing in Self-Awareness to Help Unexpected Life Impacts

The more connected you are to your authentic self, the you that really feels like you, then the better equipped you'll be to navigate your life's challenges. Here’s a list of ways you can grow in your self-awareness in daily life:

  • Practice regular self-reflection through journaling or meditation
  • Check in with your values and ensure your actions align with them
  • Be honest with yourself about your emotions and needs
  • Seek feedback from trusted friends or a therapist

Building Resilience

Resilience refers to the ability to effectively handle and recover from significant challenges and disruptions in life. That is, recovery from the very things we’re referring to as "life bombs". Those uncontrollable life changes that feel like they’re enforced on us. It involves recognising early warning signs, growing in self-awareness, and developing coping strategies.

Resilience is a major support in helping to limit the impact and frequency of these disruptive life bomb events by building emotional and psychological strength. It’s like the elastic band of human growth that further helps to navigate life's difficulties while maintaining that oh so important sense of well-being. You see, resiliency is like a muscle. This means that the more you work it, the stronger it becomes in standing against unexpected life impacts. Resiliency creates a ripple effect of ‘inside in’ psychological and emotional support. Here’s some ways to build your resilience muscle:

  • Develop a strong support network of friends and family
  • Practice self-care regularly and in the quiet times, not just in times of crisis
  • Learn and apply stress-management techniques
  • Cultivate a growth mindset that sees challenges as opportunities

Limiting the Aftershocks

When a life bomb does hit, it’s time to soften the impact and protect your overall well-being. Here’s how to get started with doing that:

  1. Allow yourself to feel: Don't suppress your emotions. Feel them fully and let them move through you.
  2. Seek support: Reach out to loved ones or professionals. You don't have to navigate this alone.
  3. Practice self-compassion: Give kindness to yourself. This is not the time for self-criticism.
  4. Find meaning: Look for lessons or growth opportunities in the experience.
  5. Take small steps: Focus on what you can control and take small actions to move forward.

You’re human after all

Remember, life bombs are part of the human experience. They can even offer us valuable lessons. While we can't always avoid them, we can minimise the unexpected life impacts, and become more skilled at moving through them. By staying connected to your authentic self and building your resilience, you'll be better prepared to weather life's storms and emerge stronger on the other side.
