Finding Your Way Back to Calm When Anxiety Takes Over

Mel Ryan 100% you

You're not alone if you've noticed how heavy everything feels right now. The world is spinning with uncertainty, and if you're honest, you're probably somewhere between feeling on edge and completely overwhelmed. You're not imagining it. Most of us are living in a state of anxiety right now, and it's affecting almost all of us.

When the World Feels Too Heavy

Anxiety shows up when we feel like we don't have control over someone or something. And right now? That's exactly where we all are. We don't have control over the big decisions being made around us. We don't have control over what's happening in the world. And our nervous systems can feel as though they're screaming because they don't feel safe. And that’s absolutely a normal part of our earthy selves.

But what if I told you that even when you can't control what's happening around you, you can still support yourself through it? And that entering into a depression doesn’t need to follow after experiencing anxiety. That you can find calm, even in the chaos?

Because you absolutely can.

Reconnect with the Big Picture

When anxiety takes over, we get stuck in, riding (or drowning) in the rapids. That tumultuous, uncertain space where everything feels like it's pulling us under. But sometimes, the way through isn't to fight harder. It's to step back and look at the bigger picture.

I'm absolutely not talking about pretending everything's fine. I'm talking am important decision about shifting your perspective just enough to soften the anxiety. I believe we chose to be here on Earth at this time. That means that there's a bigger plan unfolding, even when the earthy plan feels terrifying or like a constant worry.

This is when you ask the universe for signs. Send me a feather. Send me a rainbow. Give me something that reminds me it's going to be okay. To be clear, this isn't about avoiding reality. It's about reconnecting with your higher self, the part of you that knows you're safe, even when everything feels uncertain. Your higher self has got you. And sometimes, that reassurance is exactly what your nervous system needs to settle.

Come Back to What You Can Control

When the world feels out of control and you’re experiencing anxious feelings, the most powerful thing you can do is come back to your world. Even if it’s for short periods to start with. Understand what you can control right now. Not the news that’s for sure. Not the decisions being made that are affecting your daily life demands. But the decisions within your little world. The one you live in every single day.

To help with this, ask yourself… “What do I need right now?” Not what everyone else needs from me. What do I actually need? Maybe it's peace. Maybe it's connection. Maybe it's to laugh until your stomach hurts. Maybe it's to turn off the news for a bit and desensationalise what's happening around you.

This isn't about being oblivious. It's about supporting your nervous system so you can actually cope. Because when we're constantly feeding ourself worry and anxiety, we can forget that we're allowed to have joy too. You're allowed to find the good. All different types of good. You're allowed to laugh, to connect, to feel safe in your own life.

Choose Joy, Even When It Feels Hard

When was the last time you laughed, really laughed? Not a polite little chuckle, but the kind of laugh that fills your soul and reminds you what it feels like to be alive?

Joy isn't a luxury once off right now. It's essential. Because joy is what helps us shake off the dread and reconnect with hope. It's what reminds us that even when things aren't okay, we can still find moments of light.

So here's a little challenge for you… find something that makes you laugh every single day. Watch funny movies. Or spend time with people who make you smile. Maybe even challenge each other to find the humour in things. And when you're talking to people, even strangers, don't end the conversation on a negative or stress point. Finish with something that feels positive. Share a highlight. Talk about something beautiful you experienced. Leave people with hope.

Also, ground yourself. Walk barefoot on the grass. Look at the stars. Put your feet in water. These aren't just nice ideas, they're ways to reconnect your nervous system to the present moment and remind yourself that "I'm okay right now".

You Get to Choose How You Move Through This

The world might feel chaotic. But you don't have to be. You get to choose how you support yourself through this. You get to choose what you need. And you get to choose joy, even when it feels hard. You can choose to find kindness. For yourself and for others.

Because when you start supporting yourself, and when you start asking what you need and actually giving it to yourself, things start to change. You stop feeling hopeless, you stop focusing on situations that drain you. You will feel lighter. You'll also see how much better it feels being there for yourself. And that you start trusting that you can handle whatever comes next.

So please, take a breath. Ask yourself "what do I need?". And give yourself permission to choose it. Because you deserve to feel calm, even in the chaos. And just like you support everyone else, you also deserve to support yourself.
