“There will be hundreds of rules to live by. These rules will be imposed to you by everyone else to live their way. Following other people’s rules will lead you to be introduced to the biggest distraction you will face. Conditional love. That is ‘if you do what I want’ you will get love from me. If you don’t, I won’t give you anything. These rules that you will adopt to chase conditional love will mean that you will stop questioning things. When you stop questioning things you will forget how to listen to yourself. You will live like you are not in your life. Chasing conditional love will keep you away from finding you.”

When our trust gets broken we are left feeling shattered, alone and skeptical. Our ability to trust people and life becomes limited, our confidence wanes and we become pessimistic. We can hold ourselves back from new experiences and relationships. Consequently, this can reduce the opportunities we take to bring happiness into our lives.

Does success equal happiness? Or truthfully are we using success, and the ladder that comes with it, to not live? Should the statement ‘The more successful you are the happier you’ll be’, be changed to ‘The more I refer to the ladder of success the more I put myself down, hold myself back and genuinely struggle to feel good about myself unless I put someone else down.’ It’s a big statement, and it’s confronting.

This concept: ‘Following the rules to lead us to happiness’ when you really stop and think about it is really just keeping everyone else happy. When we keep everyone else happy, we’re not focused on ourselves, we’re not present to what feels right for us and we go back to that pattern of dismissing what we need and what we want and what’s right for us. We don’t listen to ourselves.

In truth, the biggest conversation I have with clients is, “I feel unloved, taken for granted, overlooked, unappreciated” This is the same for both men and women.

The truth is most people say “…I honestly have everything I could ever want, and yet, I am so not ok. Something must be wrong with me. I should be happy”. Happiness like this is like trying to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Because these keys of happiness are myths.
