What Do You Do When the Same Thing Keeps Happening?

Mel Ryan 100% you

You know that weird feeling when you look around and realise you're in the same situation again? Different person, different job, different city maybe… but somehow it feels exactly the same underneath. Like the same thing keeps happening.

Maybe it's always feeling like you're not quite good enough. Or that sinking feeling that people will leave. Or that thing where you give everything and somehow end up with nothing. Whatever it is, it's bloody frustrating. I mean you've done the work. You've tried to change. And yet here you are again.

These patterns aren't random bad luck. They're not proof that you're getting life wrong. They're actually your life trying to show you something you haven't fully gotten yet. And until you really get it, not just in your head, but in your whole body, it'll keep showing up.

Your Body Hasn't Forgotten What Your Mind Moved On From

When something happens that doesn't quite make sense emotionally, your nervous system files it under "not finished… loop this." Then when life brings something that feels even remotely similar, your body reacts like it already knows how this ends. It’s like the same thing keeps happening.

That's why you can consciously decide to do things differently and still end up in the same emotional loop. You're not choosing it. Your nervous system is just trying to protect you from something it hasn't figured out yet.

The pattern isn't actually the problem. It's the signpost pointing to what needs to be seen.

Why Trying Harder Doesn't Work When the Same Thing Keeps Happening

You can tell yourself you're over something. You can decide to let it go. But if your body hasn't processed it, the pattern sticks around.

Every emotional experience that didn't get fully understood gets stored somewhere. Over time, the same emotional themes create the same stress responses. The same pain showing up. And the same shutdown or panic in your nervous system.

Your body isn't doing this to mess with you. It's repeating the message because it hasn't been heard yet. And weirdly, the louder it gets, the closer you are to finally understanding it.

This is why pushing yourself harder or being more disciplined doesn't shift patterns. They don't dissolve through control. They dissolve through understanding.

What Actually Ends the Repetition

When the emotional truth behind a pattern finally makes sense. That means not just intellectually but in your actual body, then your nervous system stops dragging you back to it. Because the lesson's complete. And once that happens, the repetition just loses its grip.

What changes isn't that life becomes easy. It's that life becomes different. You have more choices. You're reacting less. Your body responds instead of freaking out. You're not drawn to the same dynamics anymore. Not because you're avoiding them, but because they just don't feel relevant.

It feels like the magnet that was holding you there releases.

And that's when you realise… that when you’ve felt the same thing keeps happening, that the pattern wasn't there to punish you. It was guiding you back to yourself.

Come Back to You

If this is hitting home, just take a breath. Notice where the same feeling keeps popping up. And notice where your body gets tight or shuts down. Then instead of asking "Why does this keep happening?" try asking "What does this actually feel like in my body?"

Because your body will tell you what's really going on way before your mind catches up.

You don't have to sort this all out alone. And you don't have to keep carrying weight that was never yours. You can have the opportunity to be willing to see it differently.
