Why Understanding Matters More Than Fixing

Mel Ryan 100% you

At some point in life, most of us start searching for answers. Why did this happen to me? How come I react the way I do? Why does my body hold onto pain, fear, or patterns even when I'm trying so hard to change? This search for "why" comes from instinct. We're wired to seek understanding as a necessity and for long-term success. In fact, one of the most powerful truths is… the moment your life makes sense to you is the moment everything begins to change for you. And this is why understanding matters more than fixing.

When We're Taught to Just Cope

From an early age, most of us learn that some things simply are. Bad luck just happens. Events occur, crap things happen, and we're told that asking "why" too deeply can create more suffering. Instead of understanding, we're encouraged to cope.

So, we manage symptoms, filter our responses, distract ourselves, stay busy, push through, or self-medicate (alcohol, drugs, gambling, food – addictions) and numb out. These quick fixes help us function day-to-day and for some provide temporary relief and short-term solutions, yet they rarely bring us peace.

Somewhere beneath all of it, the question remains unanswered. When an experience lacks true meaning, our nervous systems stay alert. A story that feels incomplete stops us from relaxing. But your body operates in an innate intelligent design. Where an unanswered "why" keeps the loop open, and your body looks for ways to hold the experience so nothing gets lost, ignored, or blindly repeated. It’s a problem-solving genius. This means that pain, illness, emotional reactions, and trauma patterns take shape as communication. Make no mistake, your body starts warning that there's more to see here.

Understanding Matters More Than Fixing, Because It’s What Brings Regulation

There's a moment that's sometimes quiet, and sometimes overwhelming. But it's that moment when an experience finally makes sense. Deep in your bones you know it as truth. It's when the "why" lands in a way that feels true, and something shifts instantly. The truth lands and your breath changes. Your body softens. Your nervous system drops back out of high alert. The story you've had going around and around stops looping.

This is the moment your soul recognises truth. Trust in this understanding brings regulation, relief, and integration. And without it, fixing alone cannot bring lasting peace. The soul always knows the "why," even when your everyday self doesn't yet. Your soul holds the root cause perspective that sees beyond the moment, beyond blame, fairness or injustice. This soul perspective makes sense of pain. The soul asks, "What did this give me the opportunity to understand about myself?" And when we approach our experiences from this angle, our story changes. What happened to us becomes something that now has meaning. This meaning reframes pain and offers us learning and encourages us to practice this new skill. And that shift into soul perspective is where healing begins.

We Keep Searching Because We're Designed To

We search for "why" by design. It's our soul self design. "Why" or understanding is the information your nervous system is waiting for before it can 'stand down'. Until your body can stop shouting. And your mind can stop trying to control everything. Until that moment your soul feels heard, and until the "why" is found, your soul will keep searching through people, work, illness, relationships, and patterns. Because something remains unfinished. The purpose of the "why" is understanding. Understanding allows us to regulate instead of react, choose instead of repeat, and experience life without abandoning ourselves.

Coming Home to Yourself

Understanding matters more than fixing because we're here to understand ourselves. When we truly know why something happened, which means when the story makes sense at a soul level, then… our nervous system can finally settle, our choices become clearer, and we stop repeating patterns that no longer serve us.
